Worked example

A restaurant bill of $240 with a 15% tip: result = (15 / 100) x 240 = $36. Add that to the bill and the total comes to $276. The same calculation handles commission, sales tax, or any rate applied to a base figure; a 15% commission on the same $240 in sales pays the same $36.

What trips people up

  • x has to be divided by 100 before multiplying; multiplying by 15 instead of 0.15 overstates the result by a factor of 100.
  • Stacked percentages do not add. A 10% tax followed by a 5% service charge on the taxed total is not a flat 15% on the original amount.
  • A percentage stated 'of the original price' after a price change refers to the old y, not the new one, which matters once a price has already moved.

How do I work this out without a calculator?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then scale: for 15% of 240, 10% is 24, half of that (5%) is 12, and 24 + 12 = 36.
What is the quickest way to find 1% of a number?
Divide by 100, moving the decimal two places left; 1% of 240 is 2.40, and every other percentage of 240 is a multiple of that.
How does this differ from the general percentage calculator?

Can x be greater than 100?
